I heard a news item this week that shook me to the core.

Imagine the morning routine of waking your daughter for school. Imagine the conversation about uniform and preparation for the day. Imagine rushing her out of the door to be on time for school.

Now imagine police arriving at the door in the early hours of the morning with the tragic news that your daughter will not return home.

Imagine a 17 year old who wants to speak to his ex-girlfriend armed with flowers and a knife. What was his morning routine? plan A give ex flowers both live happily ever after. Plan B if I can’t have you no-one else can.
The problem with his logic is the bravery of a friend to stand up to intimidation and aggressive behaviour. This courageous stand cost this 15 year old young woman a tragic price – her life – she didn’t get to school, she didn’t get to tell her mum about her day. Like many victims of knife crime, families are left with despair about this senseless violence.

My daughter is 13 years old, and she travels to school with her bestie. She would stand up for her friend in the same position. Every day, she leaves the house. I pray she returns home safely.
