The Running Class

Putting on my running shoes

When is the last time you took a risk? How did it work out?

Yesterday, I joined a running class.  What possessed me to walk into a group of strangers introduce myself and start running.  I don’t know.

This year has been a year for changing bad habits, no more eating junk food, no more doom scrolling and no more binge watching Netflix.

Every week I have to drop my daughter off to track drive home sit down for a few minutes and drive back again.  I see these committed women running around the track and I feel regret as I used to be so fit.

I bit the bullet, packed my kit, walked in, introduced myself and changed into my running gear.

Now before I started I was told you go at your own pace, some run, some walk just come in at your level.  Really – Marathon runners and regular park runners – not mums trying to do couch to 5km gradually.

I digress, to start she said we’ll run three times around the track to begin with (to begin) managed twice around track.

Everyone was so kind – ‘what brings you here?’  I answered politely but seriously I was regretting my decision.  We did about 15 minutes of stretching which really helped with the second half.

‘Now you need a slower pace,’ she said.  ‘Where are the walkers?’ I thought.

Anyway my companion was a 70 year old experienced Marathon runner.  We had to do 6 times round the track doing ‘winders’ walking the bends and running the straight.

I did it!  I felt so proud of myself.  Next week Parkrun!
